We are excited to invite you to apply for an internship with Positive Kids, a program designed to provide a rewarding and enriching experience for aspiring mental health professionals. At Positive Kids, we are dedicated to fostering the growth and development of future mental health professionals through our comprehensive practicum and internship programs.

Our programs are tailored to align with your educational background and previous counseling experience, ensuring that you gain valuable hands-on experience in the mental health field.

Application Procedure

Criminal Background Check

All practicum and internship students must complete a criminal background check before beginning their placement. This check, which includes fingerprinting by the state police, must meet school, agency, and state standards for working with minors and clients in the mental health industry in Michigan. The background check can be facilitated by the agency or completed beforehand if compliant with relevant standards. Please refer to the Criminal Background Clearance section for more details.

Hours Per Week

Students are expected to commit 15-20 hours per week, though this may vary based on individual and school requirements.

Position Description

Qualifications

  • Preferred minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Enrollment in a master’s or doctoral degree program in a psychology or counselling program.

Internship Objectives

By the end of the internship, students will be equipped with the following skills and knowledge:

  • A clear understanding of theories, techniques, and procedures specific to their guiding theory of counseling
  • Proficiency in skills fundamental to their guiding theory of counseling
  • Insight into individual behavior dynamics within the counseling relationship and the ability to recognize and address necessary changes in attitudes and behavior
  • Capability to establish and maintain ethical counseling relationships
  • Ability to identify and implement the most effective counseling mode for client issues, including appropriate referral when necessary
  • Skills to foster constructive and facilitative relationships with clients using diverse interpersonal techniques
  • Competence in evaluating and interpreting data from counseling sessions to assist in diagnosis and enhance client understanding for improved treatment and personal growth
  • Effective communication skills
  • Proficiency in discussing client information with other health professionals while maintaining confidentiality
  • Ability to make DSM-V diagnoses based on client behaviors
  • Skills to identify attachment-related issues and manage emotions

Awareness of personal and professional limitations and the ability to make appropriate referrals to support client counseling goals
